Pre-Diabetes, Diabetes and a Plant-Based Diet

Here is the last part of my husband David’s story about his retreat from heart disease and pre-diabetic condition. He used a plant-based diet regain his health.

I was fat. My belly was distended and my body fat index was over thirty so I qualified. I was more than fifty pounds overweight.

My blood sugar was over one hundred and at one point above one hundred and fifty. My triglycerides were also higher than they should be in a healthy human being. My doctor told me that I was definitely in the pre-diabetic class. He warned if I didn’t change my diet and lose weight I would be a full-blown type 2 diabetic within 2-3 years.

He stressed losing weight because fat is an early warning sign for diabetes. Curing it is the main concern if you are showing early symptoms as I was six years ago. And yes, it is possible to cure type two diabetes no matter what any “expert” has to say.

In fact reversing symptoms and eliminating the impact of Insulin Resistance on your body is possible at any point in the disease’s progression. Switching to a whole food plant-based diet is one of the best ways to do that. Some of the literature in the scientific community disagree with this conclusion. On the other hand none of the conventional treatments offers you any options that do not lead to a gradual decline and eventually death.

The line between Diabetes and a Pre-Diabetic Condition comes about when treatment with Insulin is introduced. And yet, even insulin dependent diabetics can achieve a complete reversal of symptoms through the use of diet. That is a clinical fact for those who have tried it. Diet can repair what diet has destroyed more often than not. Like Hippocrates said, and wise physicians have always heeded, “Let your food be your medicine.”

A properly designed plant-based diet will gradually eliminate all of the symptoms of diabetes. Either a Vegetarian or Vegan diet work if it is well-formed by someone who understands nutrition fully. It is possible, however, to be a junk food vegan or vegetarian. In that case you will cure nothing and continue to cause your body problems that eventually will hasten your demise.

Diseases caused by diet and curable by diet are epidemic in our nation. The vast majority of doctors and even most nutritionists remain unclear on the basic idea that at the root of our problem lies what we eat. And worse yet, this society spends three trillion dollars give or take a nickel on medical care each year. As near as I can figure it spends over two trillion dollars on food much of which has all nutritional value beyond sugar or fat carefully or carelessly removed. If we all ate a healthier, whole food, vegetarian or vegan diet both numbers could be reduced by at least one-third of their current cost. We are wasting trillions of dollars and many potentially good years of our lives fighting diseases we cause with our dairy, meat and animal fat rich diets.

The short version is:  I started exercising more and switched to a plant-based diet once I finally overcame my stubborn resistance. Fortunately, I had “in house” expertise. Genene designed a tasty and varied plant-based diet. Over the next two years I beat back all signs of my pre-diabetic condition. Of course it started whole food plant-based food which meant I lost 50 pounds.

I figure a diet change is vastly preferable to a daily needle!
