Wretched Excess

nola foodThe excess started with fried eggs and greasy hash browns at the Camellia Grill and culminated in a deep fried feast at The River Shack Tavern. We had the full compliment of deep-fried onion rings, fried green tomatoes and (get this) deep-fried pickles. I have to admit that the deep-fried pickles are a little much for me. Although, according to my family anyone who eats peanut butter and pickle sandwiches doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

In between I indulged in breads and pastries from Bread on Oak including the famous cheese bread, numerous coffee lattes and even a little cheese and some milk chocolate.. All very tasty! The best part was that I didn’t waste a lot of time feeling guilty. Which is a very good thing, because I ended up paying a price.

I have not had a really serious IBS attack in over a year – every since starting the vegan and gluten-free diet. I can’t say that anymore! I woke up on Tuesday morning with stabbing pain in my abdomen and all the other unpleasant things that happen when you have bad IBS. If you don’t know what they are you can look them up. . .Trust me I had them all! And of course, that was they day we got on the plane to come home. It was a much less than fun trip!

The good news is that I seem to be pretty much “cured” of my desire for heavy, fatty, gluten-filled, sugary, and dairy rich foods! Yesterday was all about salad and smoothies. And today I got out into the kitchen and made some simple healthy food.

I have known for years that that I can indulge my self anytime I want as long as I am willing to pay the the price. The problem is that my magical little brain has a way of rationalizing, forgetting or rebelling and sometimes I just “have” to indulge. I never seem to remember the real price until I test it out again.

The good thing is that I now remember the price and it will be awhile until I either forget or willfully ignore it. And almost as good, is that only gained 2 pounds!

PLEASE NOTE:  There is no real moral to this story. I am human and will most certainly do this again someday. . .
